OGLM serves to protect, support, advocate and empower Orphans, Women, Prostitutes and other vulnerable groups within our communities; to provide basic necessities such as food, clothing, and education to poor disadvantaged and neglected orphans whose parents have died of HIV/AIDS; and to help their families overcome poverty and hopelessness in Uganda through helping them initiate sustainable income generating projects. We also run a Children's Home & a Vocational & Life Skill Training center. OGLM has an operational base in Jinja District, with projects in Kamuli and surrounding areas.

Strategic Objectives of OGLM

  1. To contribute to the fight (Treatment & Mitigation) against HIV/AIDS amongst the Marginalized.

This objective aims at addressing the HIV/AIDS challenge amongst the marginalised (prostitutes, women, children and youth). To achieve this objective, OGLM uses several strategies:

    • Education, training and awareness. This aims at increasing awareness on HIV/AIDS, its transmission, prevention, stigmatization and all stakeholders' roles on the fight against HIV
    • Palliative care to patients affected by HIV (i.e. CSWs and OVC) is important in mitigation of HIV/AIDS patients. It affirms life and regards death as normal; it provides achievement of the best possible quality of life and prevents problems in bereavement. It also promotes a persons ability to continue living for as long as possible and supporting family and friends caring for them
    • Research and advocacy. It enables us to identify areas of need, the areas affected and percentages infected nearness to service providers and amounts of services provided. Research also helps us understand how much awareness, prevention and mitigation is needed and the resources required in these specific areas.
    • Networking and collaboration with other stakeholders. OGLM recognizes that HIV/AIDS and other development issues affect all and that each has a role to play. OGLM will hence work hand in hand with other actors in achieving the above objectives
  1. To empower rural women, commercial sex workers and children to access economic resources so as to reduce poverty.

This objective aims at economic empowerment of the rural women, children, youth and commercial sex workers. To achieve this objective, OGLM will adopt the following strategies:

    • OGLM will strive to build the capacities of its target groups, especially women and commercial sex workers with skills and knowledge in income generating activities.
    • OGLM will support the target groups to access information on markets opportunities for their produce.
    • Linking target groups to micro finance providers and negotiating for affordable credit terms. We hope to access to micro finance will enable OGLM's target group to start up income generating activities.
  1. To influence policy making processes to be responsive to the needs of the marginalised.

This objective aims at creating an enabling environment for women, children, youth and commercial sex workers to effectively engage in development and address the challenges they are faced. OGLM recognizes that challenges of its target groups can not only be met by only providing services like awareness, counselling and provision of materials. To achieve this objective, OGLM will:

    • Conduct research on specific issues affecting its target group. Finding from the studies and research will inform OGLM advocacy strategy to influence polices and practices that negatively impact on the lives of women, children, youth and commercial sex workers.
    • Work in partnership with other actors and joining networks of like-minded institutions.
  1. To build/develop the organisational capacity to effectively and efficiently provide quality adequate support to the target group.

Bearing in mind the internal challenges highlighted, and aware of the fact that OGLM is in its formative stage, there is need to address such challenges. To do that the following strategies shall be applied among others:

    • Capacity building is necessary to reach our objectives. OGLM will develop the organizational capacity in areas of finance and administration, programs / projects and the board, such that the Human Resource is equipped with basic relevant skills to perform better.
    • OGLM will network and partner by joining alliances and signing M.O.Us with different stakeholders to help refer work where necessary, and learn best practice from others who can perform different tasks.
    • Fundraising is a key factor to survive the test of times.
